Offshore Reef Sheepshead Fishing Season (March, April, May)
The Bait:
Fiddler Crabs!
True crabs have
five pairs of limbs.. Four pair are used for walking: these
are the legs or ambulatories. The two clawed limbs are called
the chelipeds. On male fiddler crabs, the larger cheliped
is the major cheliped, the smaller the minor cheliped. Female
fiddler crabs have two small chelipeds that are similar
to the minor cheliped in the males.
The Fishing
Tackle: LIGHT!
The ABU Kalex
Reel, all new for 2011 is easily usable by anglers of all
ages and sizes. The reel is capable of holding a large amount
of braided line and handling a very large fish while it's
light weight allows the angler to feel every bite, every
jerk of the fight with ease.
The Eats:
Excellent!
Sheepsead offer
a fillet with the texture of Red Snapper believe it or not.
Not only are they fun to catch, they're just awesome on
the dinner table that night as well. The bigger sheepies
are caught in the spring season on the offshore reefs in
they're also there in big numbers most seasons. You'll eat
well after a sheepshead fishing trip.. Enjoy!

Everyones
Big Question... What is so great about Georgia Offshore Sheepshead
Fishing? There are many aspects of Sheepshead fishing that make
it such a great light tackle sport. Many times, anglers enjoy
the very real possibility of catching a Reef Bandit on the offshore
reefs in the 10 to 12 pound range, which is absolutely possible.
Knowing a state record can be broken on any given trip is only
part of the fun... Capt. Lott has the current womens state record
for a Sheepshead weighing in at 12 pounds - 8 ounces caught by
angler Linda Carroll while offshore sheepshead fishing with Capt.
Richie Lott.
I can
remember for years and years there were only about four charter
guides on the GA coast that were offshore fishing for reef bandits
before the sport was popular. Most anglers thought the fish could
only be caught in the rivers around bridges, pylons and other
hard structures. Capt. Greg Hildreth and myself were the only
reef sheepshead fishermen in this area for many, many years offering
the trip as part of our seasonal offshore bottom fishing charters.
The last
couple of great appealing factors of Sheepshead fishing are the
fights and the eats! The fish fight and eat about like Red Snapper,
which many anglers do not know. Using a PENN Sargus 2000 Spinning
Reel with 30 pound Big Game Braided line on a 6-12 pound ugly
stik graphite rod will get your attention when you hook a reef
bandit of ANY size. Please take a look below at the photos and
video of the excellent Sheepshead fishing we offer here on the
GA coast.
